Lopez

Lopez is a project mainly written in Python, it's free.

A chess engine in Python

Lopez is a simple xboard/winboard-compatible chess engine in python. At the moment it has no user interface, though it would not be difficult to add a command-line mode, but you can play against the engine in winboard and pair it off against other engines. It is a toy project, and will currently play a semi-interesting losing game against the Fairy-Max engine. It's written in python so I don't expect it to be master-level, is really just a personal sandbox for playing with some AI code.

Current status:

  • Iterative Deepening Mini-Max search with alpha-beta pruning
  • Greedy, simple heuristic
  • Naive board implementation
  • Naive move generation strategy
  • Only thinks on its own turn
  • Poorly defined board interface; goal is to build a proper interface to allow multiple board implementations.
  • See todo.txt for development notes

To use Lopez with Winboard.exe, edit the winboard.ini settings in the %appdata% folder to include entries for the engine:

/firstChessProgramNames={ ... lopez /fd="C:Python27" /fcp='"./python.exe" c:usersclaysrclopezGame.py' ... }

/secondChessProgramNames={ ... lopez /sd="C:Python27" /scp='"./python.exe" c:usersclaysrclopezGame.py' ... }
