Sylph: Distributed Informatics Platform (NO MORE WEBSITES)

Sylph is part of my research to build a web without websites. I believe this is the way forward for a number of reasons:

  • Freedom: We can't control the stories that are published on Slashdot. We can't submit patches to Twitter. We can't even customize most websites the way we want. To top it all off, we're subject to the censorship of the website management.

  • Productivity (of content consumers): Visiting more than two websites means we consume information in a non-uniform manner. This takes time and makes the brain work harder. Why not have one single platform that allows us to skim, search, use, share, and create everything we want? (Hint: the WWW is already about information, NOT about building the best websites.)

  • Productivity (of developers): We waste a copious amount of effort reimplementing the same functionality again and again (instead of purely innovating). Let's build a new kind of system such that it can allow all developers to contribute in their own way. Let information scientists implement personal data mining for us, algorithmically choosing the best (most relevant) new content. Let distributed/peer-to-peer researchers find new ways to extend the platform's data exchange protocol. Let engineers develop a uniform packaging system so we can build and deploy new software packages that can make use of the data we already have.

  • Tailored information: We should be able to control what reaches our eyeballs, what comes in and goes out. When we own our data, the platform can use that to learn more about us—what peer group(s) we belong to, what we're interested in (social and attention mining). With advanced informatics in our hands, imagine what we can do...

  • No marketing: Screw ads and marketers. Screw the paywalls too, for that matter. The internet is not for them, it's for us. If we're ever to have a higher order of signal-to-noise, we need to ditch this scum and not look back.

The only way to gain this kind of abstract functionality is to decentralize everything. That's why I believe next web will be a distributed informatics layer. Sylph is a research platform for investigating the data model, protocols, security measures, APIs etc. that we'll need to implement. It also aims to be a usable client for researchers in this area.

Short-term objectives

Now back to earth for a second...

Building such a platform will take a considerable amount of time and effort to get right. With the proper involvement and research, we can accomplish this. At present, however, we need to identify achievable and sustainable short-term objectives.

This prototype of the sylph platform is written in Python, Django, and Celery. Here are the goals we want to accomplish in iteration 1:

  • Bootstrapping the exisiting web: We're going to scrape WWW content and place it into our distributed platform for exchange between nodes.

  • Scalable communications platform:

    • Direct node-to-node communications.
    • Many nodes-to-"agglomerative" node (eg. a cache server, directory service, clustering system, etc.)
    • API to node (eg. Javascript library, desktop library/client to access one's own node.)
  • Robust data exchange format

    • RDF-based
    • Grounded in semantics so that it is extensible in the future (automated reasoners are possible.)
    • Idea of URI-dereferencable resources (though optional) to achieve both current-web and future-web interoperability.
  • "Applications" on top of sylph:

    • Basic social networking facility, but not similar to present systems... more focused on getting work/projects done in a distributed setting. (I could personally care less about "social networking". This should be more tailored to getting things done.)
    • Ability to share commentary, news items, personal blogging, etc. in a relevant manner.
    • Ability to work together on projects, coding, research—easily.

Year-end objectives

  • Sort & filter content with data mining algorithms designed for you
  • Trackerless filesharing with friends and known peers
  • Highly relevant content (news, etc): never read an off-topic headline again

And what about edge-cases, such as programmers and researchers?

  • Even more distributed development practices and collaboration
  • Find people working in your research area immediately
  • Share files, papers, literature—no one can stop you.
  • Algorithms can study how you collaborate in the graph to advise you of what you need to learn, who you should meet/mentor, and developments of concern.

License

The code is currently under the AGPL 3. As soon as I get more developers, we'll probably license it under the MIT/BSD as well.

The termcolor script is GPL code, and as such will need to be removed if we want to release under BSD/MIT.

Project Setup

(Not very easy at present.)

Sylph currently requires the following:

  • Python 2.6
  • Django 1.1
  • Celery (built from source, which also requires django-celery and billiard be built.)
  • RDFLib library for RDF, which serves as the transport serialization.
  • RabbitMQ (eventually want to make this optional)
  • Relational database (I'm using MySQL, but intend to test Postgres and SQLite)

Running multiple instances on the same machine is currently done as follows—to begin, start the first instance (defaults to port 8000):

$ python manage.py runserver
$ python manage.py celeryd

To run a second instance on port 7000:

$ python manage.py runserver 7000
$ python manage.py celeryd 7000

This requires that the databases 'sylph' and 'sylph7000' exist, as well as the RabbitMQ virtual hosts 'sylph' and 'sylph7000'. ('8000' is always truncated, but any other port number will be appended to 'sylph' to serve as both the database name and RabbitMQ virtual host.) Be aware of permissions in the RMDBS and RabbitMQ!

As I'm in the prototyping stages, these configuration options are geared at rapid development rather than long-term deployment. I'm rather new to Django and Celery myself, but I'm quickly getting familiar with them both.
